Romance never fails to entertain audience. Since the early days of cinema till now, it has been served in different flavours and whenever it is presented with perfection, it appealed to all sections of the movie-buffs.


From MKT to STR, it’s the stories that are loaded with romance that struck a chord with the masses. Joining the list is Arya, whose ‘Chikku Bhukku’ is an attempt at making a full-fledged love movie.

Manikandan, a former associate of cinematographer-director Jeeva, has ensured that the film oozes with romance all through. It draws comparison of love between 1980s and the present day.

More like Bollywoood’s ‘Love Aaj Kal’, the movie has two love stories woven in one.Also some traces of ‘Varanam Aayiram’ cannot be missed while watching ‘Chikku Bhukku’.

The film begins in London where Arjun (Arya), a disco Jockey, leads a happy life. Also there is Anu (Shriya), who completes her MBA. One day, Arjun is forced to come to his native village in Karaikudi to ensure that his ancestral property is not sold.


Also Anu too is forced to come to Madurai to meet her father who gets hurt in a mishap. The two strangers come together in a train. There begins their journey towards their respective destinations.

Meanwhile, a diary of Arjun's father pops out from his bag. He browses through it to understand his dad's love life. In flashback, the movie goes back to 1985. It is revealed that Sekar (Arya) returns to his village after getting selected as a Police.


He falls in love with Meenal (Preeta Rao). But when their romance comes to light, Sekar's family resists as caste comes in between. A dejected Sekar leaves to Police Training.

There he gets acquainted with Ammaiappan (Anoop), an innocent youth who is his colleague. He comes to know that Ammayappan is in love with his uncle's daughter. Sequence of events reveals that both love the same girl Meenal.

Meanwhile cut to present, Arjun and Anu after crossing several hurdles in their journey reach their respective houses. Now they realise that they have fallen for each other. Meanwhile a twist in the form of Anu’s father ensures all well end's well.

Arya is cool and casual. As father he is more sedate and cool, while the son is vibrant and bubbly. He is impressive in both acts, while Shriya plays her role with charm. Shriya, the beauty with brains, has delivered a commendable performance. Her expressions are noteworthy and in song sequences, her steps are something which leaves us in awe.


Preeta Rao passes the muster. Santhanam who appears in a separate comedy track is little disappointing.

Though Colonial Cousins Hariharan and Leslie have disappointed with their songs but for a couple of numbers, Pravin Mani's background makes it up. Cinematography has presented the modern London and the traditional Karaikudi in their typical style.

Costumes and art work are the two other highlights of the film. It seems the costumer and the art director worked with perfect understanding to give the feel of London and Karaikudi with their works.

Manikandan has tried to ensure that the movie has no dull moments. However at many places the scenes provides one a deja vu feel. Thanks to Arya's breezy performance, ‘Chikku Bhukku’ is cool to watch.

Box Office Report

Manmadhan Ambu has made an impression on the North American audiences as the movie is running to packed houses. The Christmas weekend is also a contributing factor for pulling in more crowds to the theatres. With yet another long weekend in the offing due to the New Year, this success run is expected to continue.

Kamal Haasan has a long fan base in the US and his ventures with director KS Ravi Kumar is more than welcome among the movie buffs here. Further, the film has Trisha and Madhavan who enjoy immense popularity in the US.

The movie’s response in Tamil Nadu is excellent as well. Those who come out after watching Manmadhan Ambu could not stop appreciating Kamal’s sense of humor and the subtle comedy.

Director KS Ravi Kumar and Kamal Haasan have joined together to give several hits like Dasavatharam, Panchathanthiram and Thenali and all of them have done well at the box office. We wish their partnership continues.

Kamal Haasan's movies kindle the cine-goer's interest no end. They always arrive with a promise of a novel cinematic experience for the audience who are used to having hackneyed stuff shoved down their throats.

'Manmadhan Ambu' is no exception. Produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin and directed by K S Ravikumar, the film has surpassed all the expectations and is declared a blockbuster within just two days of its release.

"In fact it arouses even more interest what with the ace actor penning the story, script, and dialogues for the movie besides essaying a lead role. And it must be said for him that he does not disappoint," says R Balasubramanaiam, who works with a leading software company.

K S Gunasekar, another techie says, "The film turns out to be a marriage of pure craft and commercialism as Kamal's story and screenplay get attractively packaged by its director K S Ravikumar Unlike their previous outings together ('Avvai Shamnugi, Panchathanthiram, Thenali' and 'Dasavatharam'), 'Manmadhan Ambu' refuses to get slotted under one single genre coming as it does with good doses of romance, comedy, action and sentiments."

After the Superstar, it is now the time of the Ulaga Nayagan. With KS Ravikumar wielding the megaphone, Manmadhan Ambu has Kamal Haasan, Trisha, Madhavan, Sangeetha in important roles. The grand launch of the audio was held recently at Singapore with the team landing there after spending three days on a cruise. This also marks the second time Kamal Haasan has joined hands with music director Devi Sri Prasad after Dasavatharam. Let us see what this album has to offer.

Dhagudu Dhattham...

The start of this song sounds like a slowed-down version of a yesteryear Michael Jackson song which forms the base. Before we get on to more assumptions, Kamal Haasan takes over. Devi Sri Prasad has used Western arrangements for this, otherwise, folk song. It makes an interesting listen with drums beating to glory instead of the usual sounds we get to hear. Kamal explains the divide between the rich and poor which is quite typical of him. A worthy listen and is sure to aired more often.

Who's the hero...

A sober start to the song with underplayed tones and trumpets give way to the lovely Andrea. Devi experiments with Jazz in this song. Lovely music arrangements with the saxophone, trumpets and bass drums take us right back to the glory days of Jazz music. And Andrea...gives her full commitment and concentration for this song. With English and Tamil lyrics interlaced (Kamal becomes the hero and Zorro), this may not be a popular song with a section of the audience but DSP must be praised for his effort. The second half of the song leading to the end.... huh, no wonder Kamal said "Ennala ivlo dum pudichi paada mudiyathu".

Neela Vaanam...

Lovely sounds of violin welcome you the blue sky. It is Kamal's show again in Neela Vaanam. Soaked in pathos is simple but grand while listening. Kamal's high-pitched voice literally overtakes the music. "Naam vaazhntha vaazhvukku saandravathu... innoru uyir thaanadi".. shows Kamal's passion towards his love interest. The classical interludes with tabla and chimes are exquisite. Surely will evoke the right emotions when heard more!

Oyyale...
Vocals: Mukesh, Suchitra, Karthik Kumar

Three different songs and just when you are missing DSP, he assures he has not gone anywhere. A kuthu song adds more variety to the platter. Mukesh, Suchitra and Karthik sing this effortlessly and this song is not the usual DSP kuthu song. If the harmonium sounds add authenticity, underlying rhythm beats suggest otherwise. A peppy delightful number to listen to. Definitely a crowd favourite!

Kamal Kavidhai...

Most awaited number of the album. The initial reaction is that Trisha's pronunciations could be a little better but the girly voice catches up on you. Kamal is one of the very few who can discuss and convey taboo social messages without leaving a smirk on the face. "Aadayai kalaigaiyil kooduthal pesinal.. anubavam mikkaval echarikkai, kalavi mudintha pin kidanthu pesinal... kaadhalai maaridum echarikkai"... is testimony to his writing. While Trisha speaks about the state of woman, Kamal talks about a woman's prayers about her wishes. Listen very carefully to the lyrics. Adorable!

Theme of MMA...

The essence of the movie best conveyed with choirs. Racy with a sprinkling of French lyrics here and there. DSP's rhythm machines would have been happier if this has continued for a little while but just the right theme for the movie.

Is there a DSP album where he has not sung a song? This song might be familiar to the few who have watched the trailer. Manmadhan Ambu is youthful and fresh. DSP is in full swing in this song with beats and many other instruments. A fusion of pop, folk and rap, Man Madhan Ambu (the names of the three pivotal characters?) is exciting to say the least. Sure to top the charts!

Verdict:

Overall, DSP can be very proud of this album as he has deviated from his normal offerings. A westernised folk song, jazz, melodies, a poem and a kuthu...an album could not ask for more variety and DSP has delivered. Though the music gets a little heavy at times, he has Kamal, with his voice and lyrics, to save him. The new experiments shows his maturity and his intention for being innovative. With the movie's release soon, the songs must be playing non-stop on air.
